WHAT’S HOT

  • All the fun of pokemon cards (Collecting and battling) on your mobile device.

  • Currently doesn't feel like a pay to win game

  • Card design and animations look great

  • No overbearing ads

WHAT’S NOT

  • Potential to be a pay to win game.

  • Noticed some game breaking techniques already

  • As of Nov 14, 2024 you can trade or battle with friends

GAMEPLAY

Pokemon TCGP has a small learning curb. The game only requires you to have some knowledge of how pokemon battles work, as well as elemental strengths and weaknesses. Basically things you will learn in the Solo or tutorial phase. After you get that down the game is rather straight forward, and less its IRL counterpart.

At the moment only half the game is actually available to play with more becoming available over time. You can now do Pulls where you get 5 new cards in a pack which usually comes with a rare card.

The other part of the game is battling where you can do a battle with a random online opponent or you can battle with a random CPU. The battles move at a decent pace but it would be nice if the turn counters were shorter.

GRAPHICS

The pokemon company nailed the presentation of this game. From the art on the cards to the animations when you open a new pack. Everything feels polished and well thought out.

REPLAY

This game can be really addicting just like playing Pokemon TCG IRL. A great pro to playing this way is that you honestly don't have to spend any real money (I mean you could…) but you really don’t have to get an enjoyable experience.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Nintendo and TPC are really out here putting all these app developers to shame. They are showing you can make a well rounded game without placing intrusive ads or implementing pay to win mechanics. Besides getting hit with some broken technique setups, I have to say I’m really liking this mobile game.

HOW TO IMPROVE

This is a hard one, due to the game being so new and all the standard features not being implemented yet. I will say some trainer cards can use a re-work or be nerfed. Yeah I'm looking at you Misty….

Recommendation

If you like the IRL PKMN TCG give it a try.
